Friday, December 18, 2015 - Poured through Venturi into decanter and than consumed over following 3 hours. Moderately aromatic, with a beautiful combination of blackberries, black plum, tar, iodine, licorice and a lot of black pepper. Palate: dense mouthfeel with chewy fine grain tannins, this beautifully integrates its lively acidity. Initially very sweet blackberries, blueberries and raspberries which eventually calm a bit and expose blackcurrant, tar, and smoke. There is also subtle but discernible saline, cinnamon and mocha. As it oxygenates, the fruit becomes less sweet and the dirty side of the wine strengthens as orange citrus emerges. The finish holds all these flavors together. Overall this is a fantastic wine, especially for the 2011 vintage. While not as good as the remarkable 2010, it may actually be a more impressive effort given the challenging growing season and harvest. Scott Southard, already formidable, continues to improve as a winemaker. This wine has another 3 years, easy, of topflight drinking.
