Friday, January 20, 2017 - This was throwing a ton of sediment and really needed to be decanted off the solids or you're looking at a crunchy wine. Showing a bit of age with a deep garnet color. The flavor profile is pretty textbook Merlot, driven by black cherries, dark chocolate and coffee notes. There are some early tertiary notes, with a bit of tobacco and the oak notes have much more of an old cedar and clove notes. There is still a good degree of tannin, which is expected for an '05, but they are well integrated and just pick up on the finish. There is good structure to the wine, so I would put this in the drink/hold category depending on your preference for fruitier or more tertiary notes. This is a pretty four-square, modern styled, St. Emilion and, while its not the most complex wine in the world, it is a pretty good value, relative to Bordeaux.
