Friday, May 27, 2011 - With apologies and the best will in the world this is unlikely to be an objective note. On Monday morning 28 cellartackers descended upon Chateau Pontet Canet as the first of 17 chateaux visits through the week. It was my first time at P-C and standing amongst the vines always affects your perspective for a while!

Anyway, plenty of cedary charm on the nose with some rather soft red fruit and a scarf of oak. Powerful tannins still evident on the palate. Good acidity. Will properly decant and come back to it later after some air. Lots of promise.

EDIT : After an hour or so in the decanter this is starting to open. Nice cool profile and lovely balance. There is a real family resemblance to the 2005 (and 2010 barrel) tasted at the chateau. Not the biggest Pauillac but beautifully weighted with plenty of freshness and elegance. In the long run the 2005 (and quite probably the 2010) is a better wine, but this is a fine and graceful glass of wine. No rush, and preferably give it another year or two but approachable now.
