Does not like this wine:

85 Points

Friday, September 30, 2022 - I’ve thought about how to rate a wine I truly don’t like. My gripe is how you ruin an amazing grape like Cabernet Sauvignon by making it mega purple, ripe, fruit bomb & sweet? Are you appealing to the Kendall Jackson Chard crowd migrating to red wines? You can taste a Million Bordeaux wines and NONE will taste like this. I think this wine appeals to new red wine drinkers for the most part who have only California wines in their cellar. This wine will NOT appeal to Bordeaux lovers. At all. My palate HATES any kind of sweetness. My wife was Ok with this wine. I was not. So maybe it’s just my palate?

10/3/2022 5:53:00 PM - Of the culty cab winemakers, I’ve had the least satisfactory experiences with Mike Smith, although disclaimers, 1) I’ve not had any Carters, which are supposed to be his best, and 2) I’ve had this winery’s LPV, which is probably a step up the food chain from this (it’s at least more expensive). It’s not a cure all, but fwiw, I do find that more air and serving at a closer temp does at least mitigate heat, vanilla, oak, sweetness, etc. that you, and I for that matter, can find objectionable in CA cabs. Btw, drinking a ‘08 Spottswoode at the moment, which I’m guessing would be right up your alley.

10/3/2022 7:55:00 PM - LOVE Spottswoode. I like ANY Old Style Napa Cabs. Black fruit, dry etc. Dunn, BV PR, Beringer PR, Montalena, Mondavi, etc. There are no Mime Smith wines I like. They are all too ripe, sweet, fruit bombs. I detest this style. I’ve just been buying Bordeaux and mostly St Emilion and Pressac Leognan (higher Merlot percentage). Haven’t tried Carter but it’s too much money for me to try. Cheers.
