Friday, February 12, 2010 - Popped and poured. Deep, crimson hue. Nice aromas of black cherry, black olives, mocha, and spice. Medium-plus body. On the palate, this particular bottle was showing the usual core of dark fruits and game but also possessed a pronounced flavor of crushed black peppercorns, quite reminiscent of a Syrah from Crozes-Hermitage or perhaps Cornas. However, the subtle notes of eucalyptus, coconut, and vanilla from oak dispel any further comparison to the Northern Rhone. Tannins are a bit chewy and astringent on the moderate-plus finish.
Interesting to follow the evolution of this one (and Penfolds in general). Should certainly age well for many more years.
