Friday, March 22, 2024 - Brought by Joel to Fleming's tonight with a 2 hour double decant. Dark opaque purple in the glass.
Nose of dark fruit, a bit of black dirt early on and 5 spice. Later, maybe a little iron or oxblood, but it was pretty minimal all night long on the nose as compared to the very deep and effusive '09 Colgin nose.
Palate had some tannic energy with black berry fruit and more 5 spice. Really feels like it needs even more time to fill out? Feels like there should be more there, there.
My only other experience with Greer is a '14 a couple of years ago and it's very eerie how similar both bottles have performed. Really curious to know if these just need another 5 years or more to really strut their stuff.

3/23/2024 8:13:00 AM - Wow, what an amazing couple of nights of wine drinking you had! I have a ‘12 and a ‘13 of this, will hold for a while based on your note. I know I have a relatively Old World palate, but I find many of these better wines take a long time to hit peaking drinking window. I had a ‘12 Crocker & Starr last night where the last glass on night #2 showed best, and at our big tasting last May, one of the wines I brought was a ‘05 Colgin IX, with the same experience. We’ll have a high bar to hit in the fall!

3/23/2024 10:20:00 AM - Yikes! I've been fairly underwhelmed with both the '13 and '14 Greer now. Truly 'unremarkable' in any way other than you can tell there is great fruit somewhere in there.....I gotta believe in 10 more years, these have got to be immensely better!
The '09 Colgin we had, exhibited a wonderfully fragrant nose but the palate was a bit reserved albeit not nearly as reserved as this Greer. The Colgin will also be better in a few years, but very enjoyable where it is now.
