Tuesday, March 1, 2011 - Deep purple color, no bricking on this bottle - and on the initial pour, still very meaty on the nose. Later, cassis takes over the aroma, with just a touch of tobacco and something fresh and floral as well, perhaps cardamom. In the mouth, silky cherry-plum, but with a bit too much resolved oak tannin throwing mocha notes. The structure is present, but not taut enough for that added impression of sweetness, leaving the wine feeling a little fat-bottomed. The cedary finish serves well to bookend the tobacco from the nose, and it has a nice minerality to it, but unfortunately it stops a bit short.

I really enjoyed the 2000 Pichon Baron and your note here sounds like the '99 was similar stylistically. I kind of liked the mocha notes and perhaps slightly sweet take on Bordeaux. What did you pay for this bottle?
