Saturday, November 7, 2020 - This wines says a lot about the 2002 Left bank Bordeaux vintage when made by a strong wine-making team and Sourced from excellent terroir. Therefore, I’ll expand comments much more than usual.
I decanted this wine for an hour before tasting. As it turned out, I should have let it breathe for 2.
First half of bottle:
Medium-dark red color. Beautiful pencil lead, tobacco, smoke, cedar, gamey, and dark fruit bouquet. Mid-weight fruit entry which turn austerity tannic in the aftertaste. Not ready.
2nd half of bottle:
After 1.5 hours, the tannins are significantly softened. Still a little austere but way more balanced. Bouquet continues to evolve. Just Beautiful.
Pros:
Beautiful bouquet that developed over 2 hours.
Moderate, old Bordeaux style fruit extract.
Elegant, at least for a St, Estèphe.
Cons:
Austere
Harshly Tannic finish.
Ripe fruit is not exhibited today.
Summary:
I should have let this breathe 2 hours before drinking. This wine reminds me of “pre-Parker” traditionally styled left-bank claret. It will live 4-8 more years. Probably will improve the first 4 and decline the later part.
Interesting wine. I have 5 more bottles to drink. I think I’ll try one every two years to see how it develops.
