Sunday, November 14, 2021 - 2005 Red Burgundy Tasting: PWTG Single Blind Tasting of six wines from the 2005 vintage in Red Burgundy. Decanted for 2 hours before tasting.
Wine E My #3, Groups #3
Deep nose, showing earth infused cherry. Full palate, very clenched and firm, with a coarse texture but lots of dry extract. This was very similar wine making to Wine A, so I guessed both as Chevillon's which was correct. When will these 2005s soften?

11/15/2021 12:02:00 PM - "When will these 2005s soften?" The million dollar question if you have a lot of these and keep waiting...and waiting...and waiting. Your question resonates with me; until a year or two ago, every time I broached one, my drinking window got pushed back while my actuarial survival curve remained unchanged! I've made a pretty concerted effort to try a bunch of village and Premier Cru wines this calendar year, and I must say that I have found them to be all over the map in a way that doesn't necessarily respect the Burgundian hierarchy. A Hudelot village Chambolle seemed a good decade or more away from maturity, while an Arnoux Vosne Chaumes was definitely getting close. So, my not very helpful answer is "It depends"!!! I think we are just going to have to take this question one bottle at a time for the time being until we reach that magical point where the majority of bottles have started to turn the corner.
