80 Points

Sunday, June 26, 2022 - I'm just left wondering what on earth was going through their minds at Penfolds when they released this not inexpensive wine. I don't think that Penfolds stands for value (anymore) but one should expect technical competence and honest fruit, even if the blended whole risks feeling manufactured. Closed with a remarkably small and not high quality cork. Nose is pinched--just about varietally cab with a bit of eucalyptus. But the palate is also pinched--mean really--little fruit or weight, unrefined tannin and a lengthy tartaric finish. Nothing to be gained from aeration over two nights so ultimately into the vinegar pot. I'll be astonished if this ever achieves something approaching balance.
