87 Points

Monday, November 26, 2007 - Pop and pour. Effusive nose of pumice, graphite, pine forest, bacon and blackberry liquor. Flavor akin to a bacon-wrapped pepper steak with black fruit reduction, with no heat on the palate. This is not an overcooked wine: despite the intense flavors, it actually retains a silky subtlety. I wish the finish matched the potential of the wine. If some tannins come forth with air and bring this some length, this will amount to one of the great QPR Syrah scores of all time... and this is surely a nice wine in any case. Day 2: about the same, just a few building, sweet, fine tannins but still a disappointing finish on an otherwise nice wine. The nose knows. 87-88 points, with an acknowledgment that I'm feeling the need to re-legitimize the whole concept of 87 as a very good and recommended wine. This is definitely worth $20.
