2013 Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca

Sunday, March 3, 2024 - The bottle was uncorked 1 hour before the dinner and the wine was poured to enhance succulent duck puddings cooked by Madame. Medium(+) intensity fragrances of cherries, rose petals, tangerine peel, light tobacco and a bit of wood burst out of the glass. A tiny hint of alcoholic heat can also be detected. The palate is much more impressive. That's irresistibly delicious! Masculine and almost austere, it reveals plenty of firm textured tannins -wow!. They provide a seriously-grippy mouthfeel. A dark-fleshed fruity sap underpinned by a zesty, bright acidity mingles with flavors of mushrooms, blood orange, licorice and leather. It has a very good length, evoking earth, cooked tomato and balsamic aromas towards the finish. It's already tempting but I'm not sure this 2013 is at the peak: I guess that with a couple of years of patience the mouth can become more polished and more elegant. For sure a ‘great-value’ Barolo!
