  • 2018 Domaine Gauby Côtes Catalanes Les Calcinaires

This is a blend from the south of France with 50% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache and 10% Carignan. It was aged for 8 to 10 months, 20% in barrels and 80% in vats. The first day is a disappointment because we are confronted with an imposing and very persistent reduction despite a generous and energetic decanting. Anyway, we drank it during Sunday lunch but without much pleasure. The second half of the bottle was tasted again the next day at noon: this time it is much, much better. Very beautiful nose, of great purity, with aromas of sweet red fruits, scents of abundantly flowery Mediterranean scrubland, a little leather as well as very beautiful sweet spices. The weight in the mouth is rather light. The tannins are barely perceptible. The palate delivers loads of stone fruits, a fine herbaceous bitterness and some mineral tones. It finishes quite long on pepper and fresh tobacco. Very good and friendly but what a pity we had to be so patient after uncorking.

  • 2020 Jean Foillard Fleurie

I'm a huge fan of ‘Morgon Côte du Py’ by Jean Foillard. Discovering his Fleurie therefore seemed obvious to me. Yet it was a mixed tasting experience. I decanted it for 30 minutes and it was served slightly cool. It's beautifully fresh, the material is silky and superbly infused but the wine terribly lacks complexity and relief. Almost flat electrocardiogram. Wine too young, closing phase, bottle problem or unforgivable mistake about the ventilation time? I remain perplex… If anyone wants to send me another one for free, I'm interested but not sure to buy this cuvée again. Bring me back a ‘Côte du Py’ please!

  • 2013 Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca

The bottle was uncorked 1 hour before the dinner and the wine was poured to enhance succulent duck puddings cooked by Madame. Medium(+) intensity fragrances of cherries, rose petals, tangerine peel, light tobacco and a bit of wood burst out of the glass. A tiny hint of alcoholic heat can also be detected. The palate is much more impressive. That's irresistibly delicious! Masculine and almost austere, it reveals plenty of firm textured tannins -wow!. They provide a seriously-grippy mouthfeel. A dark-fleshed fruity sap underpinned by a zesty, bright acidity mingles with flavors of mushrooms, blood orange, licorice and leather. It has a very good length, evoking earth, cooked tomato and balsamic aromas towards the finish. It's already tempting but I'm not sure this 2013 is at the peak: I guess that with a couple of years of patience the mouth can become more polished and more elegant. For sure a ‘great-value’ Barolo!

4/5/2022 10:52:00 AM - i read your note on the 2012 Viņa Cubillo and greatly appreciate the thoughtful , clear details and the obvious sensitivity for tasting aesthrtic differences. That led me to your profile and ttasting notes. We share several regions of special interest in addition to N Rhône -- Bordeaux-Dom Chevalier + Margaux + Barsac. Your notes are helpful and thoughtful. I am also envious of your access to wines I never see in shops here. And I much share your interest in wines at all levels instead of exclusively the "best". Like the Vubillo. Also like Viņa Tondonia GR.
