93 Points

Sunday, May 6, 2012 - I have been drinking/collecting wines for 25+ years and have always found Italy to be the toughest to "understand". This is a perfect example as one Parker reviewer gives a 98 and another follows with a 92+. The reviews here are even more uneven ranging from 78 to 95, with many in between and no real consensus. This is still a tannic monster and you would initially think it still needs more bottle age. I am sad to say this is not the case. While additional cellaring may soften the tannins, I do not see the full potential ever achieved. The initial notes have cherry, leather and chocolate overtures that you expect will be great after the tannins fade. As the wine softens, the flavors fade at an alarming rate.Overall, an enjoyable wine that does not need to be decanted and should be enjoyed within a few hours after opening. It should still last for many years, so there is no rush to drink, but I don't think it will achieve it's original potential.
