Sunday, September 22, 2013 - A small gathering at Mark's duck house - Grange, A shot in the dark, Rousseau, Yquem and more. (Marks duck house, Falls Church, Va): This is a big scale, extremely ripe wine. I get a bit of molasses in the nose and palate, ie extremely ripe expression of shiraz. Dry black fruits, blackberry jam, maple syrup, coffee, bitter chocolate, coconut, vanilla, mint and eucalyptus. With air, mint/eucalyptus notes become more intense. Exceptional concentration, a bit of molasses in the palate as well. Despite the extreme ripeness, the wine displays remarkable balance without being heavy and cloying. It’s ability to handle the extreme ripe fruit reminds me a SQN or Saxum. The coconut aspect and ripe note are also like a Unico. Although I appreciate the quality, my appreciation for extremely ripe wine lessens as I get older.
