Sunday, July 20, 2008 - Summer dinner with all four parents (Paul & Kelli's deck: Settle, WA): Completely different experience than the first bottle. This time, I dropped this puppy into the decanter for five hours. What a gorgeous wine to look at: deep, dark, midnight purple. I couldn't walk past the decanter without sticking my nose in, and the aromas were consistently of rich, dark fruit (bordering on kirschy/jammy). In the glass, the nose was similar, but the heat and nose-hair-singing alcohol from the first bottle had settled down nicely into a black peppercorn spiciness. Big, rich fruit on the palate, and again that peppery finish, but without the throat-scorching aspect of the first bottle. I tried to pair this with roasted rack of lamb, but the Cuvee took poor lamb-chop out to the backyard and kicked the shit out of him. This is probably a wine to be savored on its own. Yum.
