2013 Penfolds Grange

Community Tasting Note

Monday, March 28, 2022 - Tasted blind. Bucket list checked off. For me, this doesn't soar to the heights of the other great wines I have tasted but comes awfully close to the apex. Intense flavors of berries, spice, pepper, and earth to go with American Oak flavors of dill, vanilla bean, and a touch of caramelization. Tannins still quite unrelenting but improves about 2 hours post opening. Despite all this intensity, there is an understated, silky, polished slant to the wine that I admire.

I know enough about wine and my palate to know that time, place, setting all factor into the equation. Undoubtedly this is one of the great wines of the World. Just not for me that time and setting.

3/30/2022 6:00:00 PM - I think you are misunderstanding what I am saying....Let me rephrase....I think the 2013 Grange is too young....I think you need to try one from the 1990's to get the full impact and experience for how these wines can taste.....just my opinion.....BTW, I tasted the 13 at the winery, and while I am sure it will be an excellent wine, I won't even think of opening mine for at least another 10 years.
