Thursday, January 28, 2021 - The End of the Golden Weather: a pre-COVID-19 Visit to Central Otago in Autumn 2020: Mike opened a pair of 2005s from the library for us to taste side-by-side. Both a similar garnet colour, the Block 5 a little darker. Both wines the product of a difficult harvest. A small crop (2.5 tonnes per ha) from 12 year old vines. A darker fruited nose with dried herbs and rose perfumes. In the mouth, more power and darker fruited. Brighter, less evolved fruit. Earthy too but more mineral and tannic. It calls for a heavier meat dish. Alcohol at 14.5% ABV not too obtrusive. Less preferred. Drink soon.
