  • Bought from winebid.com. I had good luck with the 2007 Felton rd Calvert rd. Screw cap.

    Color. Garnet orange.

Nose. That classic central Otago noise. Cedar, mulled wine, raspberry, and clove. It's always there. A touch of lavender too. Very elegant.

Palate. Brimming with cherries, coffee, blood orange, fine grained tannins, and a 40 second plus finish. Remarkable. The end is a little hot and dry.

1 hour later and the palate is showing a creamy orange flavor. This wine is very dynamic and VERY rewarding.

Held up against a charred strip steak. Impressive.

  • The End of the Golden Weather: a pre-COVID-19 Visit to Central Otago in Autumn 2020: Mike opened a pair of 2005s from the library for us to taste side-by-side. Both a similar garnet colour, the Block 5 a little darker. Both wines the product of a difficult harvest. A small crop (2.5 tonnes per ha) from 12 year old vines. A darker fruited nose with dried herbs and rose perfumes. In the mouth, more power and darker fruited. Brighter, less evolved fruit. Earthy too but more mineral and tannic. It calls for a heavier meat dish. Alcohol at 14.5% ABV not too obtrusive. Less preferred. Drink soon.

  • Decanted for 30 minutes prior to drinking over the next 4 hrs. On the nose, there is a lot of fruit concentration that really reminded me of tasting Pinot Noir in New Zealand. Smells of cola, black tea, and cherries. On the palete, surprising amount of acidity and fruit concentration. A nice touch of bitterness on the finish. A bit of tannin left. Not entirely silky yet. Seems like it could last a few more years. 14.5 alcohol but it did not feel heavy. Nicely balanced wine that showed finesse overall but I did not get much in the way of secondary flavors, length, or complexity.

  • Burgs & Barolos (Bronte): plum red, slightly muddy lustre.
rich, black cherry compote, whole bunch/dried herb spice and a little game development happening now. a lot going on.
rich and fruit-driven, plums damson and black cherry in a delicious blend, less stalk but a hint of nutty oak coming through also. medium weight with crisp acidity and a powerful long finish. very impressive wine, perhaps lacking a little in elegance only. drinking beautifully.

  • Deep red, some black, hint of earth. Red berry, earthy notes, sour cherry. Silky smooth. Sweet and alluring. Rich red berry, cherry stone zest and sour edge adds impact, black spice, has gained some nice development.
