92 Points

Friday, December 12, 2003 - Tasted in double-blind fashion at Vintage Wines, Ltd. Bottle provided by Erik Miller. Bright disc. Opaque black robe with deep purple rim. Clean nose, showing very intense aromas of black fruit, mocha, vanilla, coffee and toasted oak. Full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity, massive ripe tannins and dominant black fruit. The fruit is framed in liberal oak. Long, fruit-filled finish. This is Webster's definition of a "fruit bomb". The wine was well-received by the tasters, but misidentified as a California Syrah. My score reflects the addition of two points for the massive fruit, with subtraction of two points for the deficiency of varietal character.
