2015 Hugel Gewurztraminer Classic

Sunday, November 22, 2020 - NOSE: Classic Alsatian GW nose with rose petals, lychees and papaya with addition of some stone minerality. (88-89p)
TASTE: Lovely, clean fruitiness. Obvious ripe, warm vintage fruit, quite rich and off dry mouthfeel. Drier on the mid palate with the typical slight bitter touch (think peach stone) arriving at the exit, into the medium long aftertaste. And then there’s the cleanliness or purity of fruit, this hallmark of Hugel winemaking even in warm vintages and at basic quality levels. Hugel’s basic wines consistently outperform some of the Grand Crus from lesser producers and typically offer the best QPR of any Alsace wines. This wine, their basic GW is yet an example of that. (87p)
OVERALL: Drinks nicely now. Will easily last until 2025 but expect it to gradually loose freshness. So with this wine’s ripe fruit in mind I would drink it by 2021 or 2022. It kept and improved (1-2 points?) after being kept cold for several days after opening. TOTAL SCORE 88 points.
