Sunday, March 1, 2015 - Alt-Paulée at Bouley: As great a wine on this night as any other we drank, probably the finest showing of any. Fantastic! Such complicated aromas and flavors - gamey, darkly fruited, iron and mineral, herbal, even some flowers. And so articulate and well defined in its expression. A roundness and elegance that belies the village and the vineyard's reputation. The finish is long and aromatic, the wine produces that craved-for feeling of Burgundy contentment. There is really good mid-palate depth, but it is depth that does not show the grandiosity of a grand cru. And this is not a criticism, it is something I learned about wine while drinking this bottle - the greatest expression of this NSG vineyard in a great vintage is not equal to a great showing of a grand cru. And that is something that they got right in the classification system, which can sometimes feel frustratingly incoherent.
