  • Second Sunday Group: 2005 Bordeaux (R&D's): Courtesy of N's cold cellar. Old, slighty brown meniscus. A bit dull aromatically, showing some dried leaves and leather, perhaps some cherry spice if you really swirl and coax some life out of it. Much better on the palate though, with bright cherry notes along with spice and forest floor. In decline if this is a truly representative bottle. Drink up.

  • St. Vincent (Indianapolis): Birthyear Chevillon - hell yes! Thanks Andy. This is rocking, with a lot of apparent development coming through in the leathery, mushroom, and other savoury - almost brothy - bass notes around the gentle red fruit. Some of the leather blows off with some time in the glass as more delicate herbal and floral nuances start to emerge from beneath. Perfectly mature now with the structure fully resolved - this is drinking wonderfully.

  • Drank with BrooklynGuy, below, and he nails it. Elegant and wild and very much alive. A revelation in the context of Chevillon's wines.

  • Alt-Paulée at Bouley: As great a wine on this night as any other we drank, probably the finest showing of any. Fantastic! Such complicated aromas and flavors - gamey, darkly fruited, iron and mineral, herbal, even some flowers. And so articulate and well defined in its expression. A roundness and elegance that belies the village and the vineyard's reputation. The finish is long and aromatic, the wine produces that craved-for feeling of Burgundy contentment. There is really good mid-palate depth, but it is depth that does not show the grandiosity of a grand cru. And this is not a criticism, it is something I learned about wine while drinking this bottle - the greatest expression of this NSG vineyard in a great vintage is not equal to a great showing of a grand cru. And that is something that they got right in the classification system, which can sometimes feel frustratingly incoherent.

  • From an excellent looking bottle, this wine had a deep red center with fully oranging rims. The high- intensity nose displayed black cherries, sour cherries, black spices, with a hint of cinnamon.

In the mouth, this wine was very rich and ripe, clearly evidencing the power and complexity of both the vineyard and the year. This wine was incredibly ripe for Burgundy and yet, at the same time, so zingy and long. The rounded tannin was barely detectable under a wave of black fruit.

While I would argue this wine is fully mature, it will continue to taste great for 5-10 years. However, the flavor profile will become more mature and it will probably have less of the "iron fist in a velvet glove" mouthfeel that it currently enjoys.

    Enjoy!
