Monday, August 9, 2021 - These mass production Marlborough winemakers do a fantastic job in churning out millions of bottles of modestly priced wine each year, yet managing to keep a decent baseline standard. Oyster Bay is a perfect example. Their Sauvignon Blanc is nothing to call home about, but it is always a consistently decent drink. Bottled under screw cap, there was a hint of reduction and sulphur when first poured. With a bit of air though, it was very Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in character, with notes of gooseberries and green grass, snake fruit, and maybe just a hint of cat’s pee. The palate was simple, but brisk and balanced, with more of those gooseberries, maybe a sweeter bite of donut peaches, and then a good streak of acidity providing some spine. It finished with a kiss of spice and a little flush of glycerol that peeled out when warm. That apart though, it was a decent drink that went well with our food.
