Friday, July 20, 2012 - Short version: really, very much enjoyed it, but wonder if it was worth the money. Also wonder if I would've enjoyed it as much blind, or if knowing the cool backstory and the quality producer made a difference. In any event, to the note itself. The nose was spicy with allspice and cloves, but still not overpowering and pleasantly mild. First thought on the tongue was that this aged well and still retained quite a bit of its structure. It had a long, lingering finish with supple tannins that went well with the Italian food (natch) we paired it with. We probably didn't decant as long as we should've initially (30 minutes), so it really opened up in the glass over time. As it opened, and especially on the finish, we got blackberries and sour cherries -- really strong fruit for a 27 year old wine. As I say, very enjoyable, but the lingering doubt of the QPR is there.
