94 Points

Wednesday, October 21, 2020 - Aromas of creme de cassis, dark chocolate, violets and hints of tobacco leaf. Medium to full bodied, this comes off as a very refined version of GIII. Has good concentration, but its real high points are how it dances on the palate with suave texture and graceful balance. Black and blue fruit with bitter chocolate highlight a flavor profile built on purity. Refined and well integrated tannins bring it through to a medium length finish. This is very good. It doesn't quite get the depth and extraction of a Myriad GIII, but is a bit more classy.

9/7/2021 1:22:00 PM - nice note. wine spies has the 2018 for $109 - thoughts? I am a fan of this vineyard, but one of the challenges, I think, is that it is a very large vineyard, so there is does tend to be a fair amount of variation between wineries based upon crop selection, in addition to the winemakers skills.

I find that the Myriad versions make for a good contemplative study of the vineyard, but I often get more drinking pleasure from the "classier" interpretations

9/7/2021 1:57:00 PM - I have definitely trended away from the Myriad versions, based on the downward trajectory of the wine after a year or two. That version is obviously based on opulence and meant to drink early. For Krutz, I've only had this one vintage, but I was impressed. Like you said, a lot comes down to where specifically they are sourcing, but it seemed high quality when I had it and the price is much better than most. It's rare to get one of the more glorified vineyards in Napa for around $100.
