89 Points

Thursday, October 11, 2007 - - 89/100
COLOR: 5/5 - Deep, bright burgundy color.
NOSE: 12/15 - Full, if not overly complex, nose of leather, tobacco, spice, and a whole berry jam medley. Much more expressive immediately upon opening than after a few hours.
FLAVOR: 8/10 - Velvety smooth, round on the palate, with black pepper, smoke, cassis, and blackberry. The high alcohol content is only noticable as a lilt of candied character to balance against the tannin.
FINISH: 7/10 - Lingering finish of sour cherry, pipe tobacco with some licorice here & there. If you hold it & look for it, you can find the alcohol. After a few minutes, a black raspberry glow starts building.
POTENTIAL: 3/5 - This wine is drinking quite well today, but there's a serious punch underneath that will probably make this a good 5 year cellaring candidate. It will be interesting to see how the fruit continues to integrate through time.
OVERALL: 4/5 - For a novice winemaker, Maynard did good work here. I was more than ready to slap another low/mid 80s badge on this in CT, but this is a better wine than that.
