Thursday, November 10, 2016 - Broadbent - Madeira, Port, and English Bubbles (One Market, SF): Medium-minus ruby with a hint of garnet at the rim.
Stewed, baked fruit. Dried and stewed black cherry. Hint of tomato savoriness, and almost peppery reduction. The only Port so far with darker fruit. Well-integrated mushroomy oak. Reminds me of an aged Sagrantino - this is a red wine with development. Oak still has a bit of baking spice character, but is starting to integrate.
Structured, tannic (high tannins, grippy and chewy), RS gives it away as not Nebbiolo, but it has tendencies in that direction. Acid is medium plus. Not super dark-fruited in the mouth, but there’s savory development.
It’s like a very developed red wine with the structure of a young aggressive Nebbiolo.
Tasty.
