Saturday, May 16, 2020 - Zoom blind tasting #4: Bordeaux (At home during circuit breaker): Probably at peak and very enjoyable. This was very different in character from the two elegant wines that preceded it - there was a bit more force and old-school charm here. The nose had a coffee-ish roastedness to it, with ripe dark cassis and red berries along with a dash of spice and tobacco. There was just a hint of meaty, earthy funkiness creeping in at the edges too. With time, a nice floral character came out as well - violets I thought. Really nice. I liked the feel on the palate too - velvety tannins and lovely integrated acidity forming the backdrop for deliciously plump flavours of red cherries, plums, and a lovely flush of spiciness and bittersweet dark chocolate tracing its way into a satisfying finish. As with the nose, there was just a touch of earth and meat in there as well. Nothing mind-blowing (it was a tad simple), but this was certainly moreish and delicious stuff - this really hit the spot today.
