Tuesday, June 30, 2015 - Curiosity got the better of me, and I opened this 2005 Premier Cru. Medium colored center. Scents of reduction, black cherry, and anise. Not surprisingly, tight and nothing but structure right out of the bottle. Then over a few hours, dense, brambly red and blue fruit emerged with a sappy upfront feel and a surge of acidity, soot, and drying tannins at the end. This is a big, powerful wine for the Cote de Beaune, and it has plenty of material. Subtlety is not its strong suit. While it is not brutal now and there is pleasure to be had, let it sit for 7 to 10 more years to loosen and unlock it.

Second night-now some cooler mint aromatics and a lighter, more airy feel. Ah, some earth shows up as well-nice complexity. Only downside is a somewhat unexpected loss of fruit, although some low key red fruit does remain. I still read this as needing more aging, but maybe my time frame above was a bit too long.
