Monday, May 27, 2013 - A Holiday Weekend BBQ (or "How I milked my birthday an extra few days") (Rancho de Los Olivos): Some stalwarts joined me for post-BBQ indulgences in the wine room. Rather than move to some sweet wines I had set aside, I gave in to a groundswell of interest in more reds, and was happy to honor a request for a magnum of '94 to get us going. Expecting a tannic and perhaps thin wine, I was instead dazzled by this baby: intense and elegant, richly textured with dark fruits, cedar and a bit of leather. A velvety finish. Well balanced and very impressive -- where did this come from?!
