Strawberry, black currant, cedar, freshly polished black boot leather, dry undergrowth, and sweet liquorice. An amazing nose. On the palette, less ripe fruit, but beautifully balanced cedar, leather, and under ripe berries. Although the fruit has become a little riper on the second glass. Compared to the 1995 that I had about 18 months ago, this is significantly less concentrated and more austere on the palette, but is still a fantastic, classic, left bank.

Stood up for three months. Bottom neck. Cork in pristine condition. Decanted for two hours. A medium ruby core fading to a pale ruby outer edge. Opens up with aromas of cedar, red berries, blackcurrant, liquorice, a touch of lavender, shoe polish, and campfire smoke. The palate - while less expressive and inviting than the nose - is texturally soft and rounded. As a direct comparison to the 1995, which was outstanding this is not as sleek, polished or concentrated - and overall presents as more classical and austere as one might expect from the contrasting vintages.

Farbe leicht bräunlich. Nase typisch Bordeaux, minimal oxidativ. Im Mund dunkle Früchte, etwas Kirsche. Guter, reifer Bordeaux, sicher noch gut bis 2025(?).

Superb wine in an amazing drinking state, so typical bordeaux, very black fruit forward, spices, herbs, ink, leather, good balance, all in check. Intense and concentrated! Top

Fully resolved and mature to my taste, a lovely aged Medoc with silky smooth fruit along with the usual nuances. More of an elegant than powerful wine.

Medium bodied, firm, stoic, not quite austere, but close. Better on the nose, with its red fruits, cedar, herbs and forest floor, scents than on the palate. Mature and ready to drink.

Munskänkarna Göteborg Bordeaux-tasting, 50´s to the 90´s.
Despite it´s age still lots of fruit, oak. Feels pretty modern, but also very mature. On the palate there is still lots of fruit and tannin. Not completely balanced, feels over-extracted. Still a nice and mature wine, would have expected more.

Mature Bordeaux All blind and from Magnums except Pichon Baron and La Mission HB: Red to brick color. Much younger on the nose with cassis aromas and tobacco dominating. Still harsh tannin but lively acidity and decent fruit. Medium long finish. A lot better than you would expect, once the wine and above all the vintage was revealed.

Chosen because easily accessible in the wine fridge when more claret was called for, this wine disappointed after the Sociando-Mallet and Haut-Brion being shorter, harder and less complex. An unfair placing probably.

Leoville Poyferre had singular aromas of lacy blue fruits, lifted menthol, plums, raspberries, flowers, gravel, leather and cedar. Its elegant, longiliniear, reserved and neat palate has some style, a traditional feel, with very good layering, and freshness. Ended pretty long and convincing with silky tannins.

I have mixed impressions of this wine. First sniff and sip were excellent with round body, fine claret fragrance, hints of wet leather and wax adding complexity, still bright acidity and firm tannins on the finish. But, first, my wife piped up and said "I smell shit, isn't that brett?" and, then, the pairing, succulent marbled fillet steak, produced that unpleasant oily note which I have sometimes found before with beef and claret, but not with the beef and Pontet-Canet a few days ago. Perhaps I shouldn't blame the wine for that but the magic was broken and was not recreated with the last sips after the beef was finished when the wine seemed harder than at first. If brett there was, it was at first for me only the faint background kind which adds to complexity but it may have developed in the open bottle. Nevertheless good but should have been better. I will chose lamb as a pairing for my second bottle.

Enjoyed a lovely evening accompanied by the 94 vintage this evening.
Bottle - impeccable condition, level about 1cm under the cork Condition - enjoyed with some low profile cheese and bread Colour - still quite dark red - smooth in the glass Nose - for me, an immediate hint of coco powder and chocolate, followed by forest fruits. Taste - even after 20 years it still hits a punch in nose, flavour and taste.
Great wine - I would say couple more years left inside, but thoroughly enjoyable now !!!

A Holiday Weekend BBQ (or "How I milked my birthday an extra few days") (Rancho de Los Olivos): Some stalwarts joined me for post-BBQ indulgences in the wine room. Rather than move to some sweet wines I had set aside, I gave in to a groundswell of interest in more reds, and was happy to honor a request for a magnum of '94 to get us going. Expecting a tannic and perhaps thin wine, I was instead dazzled by this baby: intense and elegant, richly textured with dark fruits, cedar and a bit of leather. A velvety finish. Well balanced and very impressive -- where did this come from?!

Bouquet: Some earth and smoky wood, firm black currant. Flavor: Like the bouquet. Not a long finish but still good. Palate: Still firm tannins could use up to another 10 years. Comment: Classic St. Julien. David, Philip and PJ preferred this to the Chasse-Spleen--perhaps liking firm rather than rounded tannins and the black currant character.

From 75cl, decanted 1 hour. Pongy cork, but wine seems unaffected. (On opening: bad-tempered, dustbin-juice smell; biting entry). Distinct orange at rim. Gorgeous mature Médoc scent (a cedar-wood box lined with dark crimson velvet, containing a single, perfectly ripe, dark red fruit). Taste not quite so good. Slightly bitter, tannic entry; good sweetness on the mid-palate; grippy, over-mature, plummy, tannic finish. Fine match with tender braised beef. (Of course it was better two years ago: drink up). 88P

Cult Californians Wine Tasting (Crown Wine Cellars, Hong Kong): Deep red translucent colour. Restrained cedar-dominated nose. Good, tart, structured classic Bordeaux palate which led you to think it came from a better year. Some length. This won a lot of friends, coming as it did at the end of a night of much more exceptional wines and directly preceded by the Haut Brion 1986.

NobleRottersSydney - Champers & Reds (Guillaume at Bennelong): {12.5% cork} Here’s something classical, but from a neither-one-thing-nor-the-other vintage. In fact the nose is the best part of this wine, all lovely classic blackcurrant and cedar, a little correct leafiness. Not enthralling, but certainly promising. The palate is dry, perhaps now a light-medium in weight, certainly aged, with soft developed cabernet fruit. It’s best feature is good evenness of finish; the weight is not crammed towards the front of the palate like the previous two wines – it’s clearly the best of the reds tonight for me. But it is beginning to dry out somewhat on the finish, enough to suggest that it’s on the downward slope of maturity. Still good, not great, but don’t tarry too long unless you like your wines on the desiccated side.

Classic St Julien nose, albeit simple. Pencil lead and tobacco, with dark fruit still prominent. The palate is very pleasant but slightly hollow. Medium to light-bodied and elegant, this was a great match with a variety of entrees at our table. Excellent wine for the price.

Stone fruit with mint, herb, black tea, and green pepper. Fairly full dark fruit. Hard edge, slate, and acidic tannins. Surprisingly dense fruit with toasty dark oak, prune. Nice complexity, but hard. Holding fine, but don't think it'll get better with age. B

Glasgow Offline (Chardon d'Or): An intriguing nose: some hedgerow scents and a touch high-toned. A light, elegant attack is followed up by a big tannic structure, though soft tannins. There’s plenty of acidity too, but it’s a touch spirity on the finish. I must say, I’m not sure what I make of this. It doesn’t do it for me. OK/Good.

NobleRottersSydney - Bordeaux v Australia (Lucio's, Paddington): The Poyferre was a red-crimson colour, and still displayed rich succulent blackberry primary fruit aromas. These followed on the palate, where the soft ripe fruit was still playing second fiddle to strong tannins. This wine is still showing plenty of youthful vestiges, perhaps belying the reputation of the vintage. An attractive medium-bodied claret which tastes even better with food, and seems to have some room to improve yet.

NobleRottersSydney - Classed Growth night (Darling Mills, Glebe): Solid red. Blackberry aromas, slightly leathery, but still a forward and primary-fruit-dominated nose. Tannins overpower the fruit, which in turn dominates the acid. Tannins are not too hard though, so it’s quite drinkable. Which is just as well, because although I think this will keep for a few more years, I can’t see it actually improving.
