Saturday, November 19, 2011 - Best of Bordeaux, Including 1966 Pichon Lalande (K&L Wines, Redwood City, California): Deep core with some browning. Musty at first, but this is sound. Big, dense wine with an almost syrupy entry. Great ripe fruit without any artificial sweetness and an appealing mintiness for complexity. It is given shape by a long, dry finish. What this lacked in finesse compared to the younger Poyferre, it makes up for in material and power. One gets the sense that it needs every bit of 20 more years to develop complexity and fully express itself. After that, it probably has enough stuffing to be fantastic for another 20-30 years. A bruiser with tremendous potential.
