Tuesday, December 5, 2023 - Italian Wine Scholar Class at The Texas Wine School. 100% Nerello Mascalese from the North side of Etna at approx. 2000' altitude. Med (-) ruby, with enticing aromas of red raspberry, red cherry, purple flowers, black plum, Mediterranean herbs and earth. Aged in cement and large neutral oak vats. Dry but sufficiently fruit-forward, with a pleasant crispness and freshness thanks to the altitude. Med to med (+) acidity, chalky tannins and alcohol (actually 14% but seems a little lower). Med (+) body and flavor intensity w/ a pleasantly saline and mineral finish. Well-balanced, versatile and a good value in the increasingly popular Etna category. Drink now or for the next several years, but IMHO not one for long-term aging since one of its appeals is the immediacy of the fruit.
