  • 2006 Luigi Righetti Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Capitel De' Roari

The nose is clean, medium (+) in intensity, with captivating aromas of ripe black and red cherry, sweet spice, dried herbs, nougat and sweet tobacco leaf. The palate is dry, but with still plenty of ripe black and red fruit. The palate is consistent with the nose and ends with a long, slightly bitter, licorice and asian spice finish. The acidity and tannins are medium. The alcohol is medium (+) at 14.5%, but overall the wine is well-balanced. It is full-bodied, yet fairly lithe, without the monolithic weight and extraction of some of the more famous Amarones. It is good by itself and even better with food, without overpowering the food. It is drinking well now and is by no means past its prime.

  • 2013 Roberto Anselmi Garganega Capitel Foscarino Veneto IGT

This a great little wine. Clear, bright, medium (+) lemon in color. The nose is clean, fresh, with apple and ripe citrus. The palate is dry, with medium to medium (+) acidity, alcohol (13.5%) and minerality. The palate is consistent with the nose, with nice orange marmalade and ruby red grapefruit on the slightly bitter finish. This is a surprisingly rounded, rich, yet still medium-bodied, wine. It pairs well with seafood and savory salads with citrus dressing. Drink now.

  • 2013 Pico Maccario Barbera d'Asti Lavignone

Clear, bright, medium ruby, with a hint of garnet on the rim. The nose is clean, medium (+) in intensity, with strawberry, red flowers, vanilla. The palate is dry, with medium alcohol (13%) and medium tannins, minerality and medium to medium (+) acidity. The palate is medium in intensity, consistent with the nose and also showing ripe red cherry and grapefruit on the finish. Everything about this medium-bodied wine is very balanced. This is a very approachable and enjoyable wine, good by itself or with food. Very good QPR. Drink now through 2017.
