93 Points

Tuesday, January 18, 2011 - It's been a few years since I've tried both this and the "normal" Los Chamizal bottling. True to form, the Rocky Terrace continues to outperform its sibling.

This continues to develop in an elegant way, and may have shed just a bit of fruit since the last time around in 2008. A gorgeous nose, pure Zin typicity with a nice hint of brambles rounding off the package. On the palate, it continues to be balanced, with some acidity to balance the fruit, and some lingering tannins (which could be a function of improper bottle prep - these just came from offsite and seem to be throwing some fine particles). Initially on opening is just a tad tight, making me wonder if I had overshot the drinking window. I don't think so, given the way it opened up over 15 minutes. That said, I wouldn't need to wait any longer on these bottles.

Update: I was a bit wrong about this, as it only gets better 8 hours later. Richer, more mellow. Any acidity and tannins, folded in. What does start to show through, with as much improvement as is evident, is a touch of heat on the backend. Just a touch, but knocks my late night score down a point to 93.
