Not really my style. A bit more savory, meaty than I prefer for a summer quaffer. But, given that, it's very nicely balanced at present, with acids nicely in check against abundant fruit. 90 points for what it is. This would have been better served with a thoughtful food pairing. It is not one for a 80 degree day on the boat.

Drank very well. Smooth and still alive, though probably slightly past what most would consider "peak". Nevertheless, this bottle was more than enjoyable, particularly after 30 minutes in the glass. From a bottle with no corrosion on the capsule.

What a pleasant surprise. I pulled this with zero expectation. I had a just "ok" outing with this wine in 2009, and by all accounts, it should've been over the hill by now.

It is not. Poured into a Burg glass - expressive aromatics. The obvious question becomes "how does it taste". Well, it performs like a well-behaved, lower alcohol, aged Shiraz from Oz. Gone since I last tasted this in 2009 are the overt notes of scorched earth. Instead, a well-balanced syrah with residual oak that compliments rather than intrudes on the overall flavor profile. A pop of acidity keeps this "refreshing". For my taste, this is probably drinking at its peak, CT tasting windows be damned. Passive storage since purchase back in 2007 or so. A welcome surprise.

For anybody out there who still has this in their cellar, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. This has morphed from a South African idiosyncrasy (too much oak / smoke) to something that could perform as something of a ringer in a syrah tasting.

12/20/2012 9:55:00 AM - Jim- Thanks for the heads up on the '09 Croix Figeac. The WX site indicates they still have some. Also, I see a few other wines of interest. Haven't had contact with them for years, but shall give them a ring. I went to the U of M for a short period, a long while back, when they had good football.
