Friday, February 13, 2015 - Delicate mousse. Golden fruits on nose. Mature palate with generous dosage that tries to balance out a medium high '96 acidity.

An enjoyable drink for sure, but I have difficulting detecting any complexity or finesse that cannot be found in many other, regular (and cheaper) vintage champagnes.

On day 2 - this was already going downhill. Thin and acidic. Drink up.

2/13/2015 10:52:00 PM - Maybe in another 10 years. They can be really frustrating as they haven't seemed to budge since release, if barely. Were these built for our kids? I have DP and Krug and each time I open a DP, while a gorgeous with with layered fruit precision, I wonder why this isn't evolving to the wonderful baked biscuits and burnt caramel I get with many a '95 LGD or many other vintages. I am wondering if it is just too much a brut of a vintage or will our kids laugh at us as we sit in the old folks homes?

2/15/2015 11:32:00 AM - Thank you for commenting. I am a little doubtful, but my experience with LGD is limited to this one bottle. However, the vintage (Veuve Clicquot) 2002 already has those lovely evolved flavours you describe. The 1998 seems over the hill... Maybe the VC's of the late ninetees dont have the quality to keep?

2/15/2015 2:20:00 PM - There is some bottle variation and so much about the way it is stored. I bought a bottle of 1995 LGD off a good friend that worked as a wine sales guy, after working years at a local wine shop. His friend received it as a gift but it had been in the cold part of his cellar, and I paid him full price. I saw so many TNs on cT over the years that 95 had lost its fizz, more like a good chardonnay still wine. I have a good passive and champagne is kept in the coldest spot and its pitch black a screw in light bulb when I go in. That 1995 shared with CT friends was one of the best champagnes I have had, and I have had many great ones. It has burnt salted caramel flavors that came up with the subtle orchard fruit and toasted pretzel. I will never forget it and its why I only have one overhead light built into my cellar. I thought I would eventually put in LEDs, but storage is everything.

I am glad you addressed the gold label as I have a 2002 and 2004 in singles, and had no experience with them. I wish I had more.
