Friday, September 29, 2023 - An approximate blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault that was sourced from vines 35-40 years of age, Domaine le Sang des Cailloux's 2019 Vacqueyras is a deep-to-opaque ruby wine that serves up an intense aromatic profile of blackberries, red plums, licorice, Provençal herbs, white pepper, tobacco and loamy earth. Medium-to-full-bodied, vibrant, softly oaked, seamlessly alcoholic (14%) and with plentiful fine-grained tannins, it delivers flavors in line with the aromas and stays solid on the mid-palate. Finishing medium-to-long and with a bit of tannic grip, this is a delicious Southern Rhone that should evolve nicely over the remainder of this decade. Although it is still a little rough around the edges, I would not hesitate to pop the cork at any time over the next seven years. This particular bottle was ordered from a restaurant's wine list and serially tasted over a two-hour period after opening. Give it an hour of air if you can. Drink now-2030.
