Saturday, November 13, 2004 - Intrigued by Matt Kramer's interest in this producer in his new book and in previous columns, I located their website and had a very nice conversation with Brooke Carhartt, culminating in the purchase of several bottles of Syrah. This 2001 is a very impressive wine. The color is a dark purple eggplant (which I like). The nose builds nicely with aeration, reminscent of plums and violets. So too the wine builds on the palate, laced with solid structure like a northern Rhone but also carrying lots of full, elegantly-rendered, tangy fruit. Tannins are substantial but not obtrusive, promising significant aging ability. By the end of the evening, it has become a seamless, all-of-a-piece wine of balance and character. Matt Kramer often talks of wine with a sense of place. This syrah has it in spades. Great effort!
