  • No formal notes. Nice red and blue fruits with spice. Leans out after air time with the acidity taking over.

  • Rich garnet color. Nose of holly berries, spice, licorice. Full on the palate with brambly blueberry fruit plus some sweet cherry notes on the back end. Tannins smoothing out, finish moderate. Very nice wine, aging nicely. Sense of place, definitely.

  • This is for real!!! Dark purple. Aromas of blackberry, mocha, toasty oak. Initial palate revealed a sumptuous array of dark fruit including blackberry and some blueberry along with earth, mocha, and hints of mocha, pepper, and vanilla. Extraordinaryly well integrated with a moderate full palate finish including fine, sweet tannins. Tasted blind along with the 2000 Carhartt which was good but not on par with this wine. Everyone agreed the 2001 was an outstanding syrah and several went out on a limb to compare this with wine priced 3X to 4X the Carhartt. This is an excellent wine and an exceptional value!!!!

  • Intrigued by Matt Kramer's interest in this producer in his new book and in previous columns, I located their website and had a very nice conversation with Brooke Carhartt, culminating in the purchase of several bottles of Syrah. This 2001 is a very impressive wine. The color is a dark purple eggplant (which I like). The nose builds nicely with aeration, reminscent of plums and violets. So too the wine builds on the palate, laced with solid structure like a northern Rhone but also carrying lots of full, elegantly-rendered, tangy fruit. Tannins are substantial but not obtrusive, promising significant aging ability. By the end of the evening, it has become a seamless, all-of-a-piece wine of balance and character. Matt Kramer often talks of wine with a sense of place. This syrah has it in spades. Great effort!
