Monday, October 30, 2023 - Superb Montrose, tasting very similar to the 2016, and while perhaps a notch off that future legend it's solidly ahead of the 2019 on my scorecard. It's an old-style Bordeaux in every sense except its bright magenta rim, infused with loads of woolly tannin with a firm grip extending all the way to the back of your throat which would probably make this challenging to drink if the fruit wasn't brimming with so much freshness. The flavors are dominated by blackberries with a nice juicy snap that leaves it closer to the edge of ripeness than you'd have been prepared for from this vintage, and a sheen that perseveres even through all that tannin. Pencil fillings and similar metallic elements contribute as much to the flavor as the fruit itself, but there is almost no trace of any element of woodiness, just a bit of something enticingly scorched.
