Not scored. I found this wine really hard to assess in youth. Decanted for 3 hours, and best glass was an hour into the bottle. Reticent nose. Very black fruited and savory graphite - no fruit and no hints of anything red. A lot of fine tannin interwoven throughout. A bit glossy. At the very end, a little bit of blueberry and red cherry could be perceived. VERY different animal than the 2019 was (red fruited, full, billowy and a little Napa-esque). I wonder if this is what the 2005 was like in youth? I get that same profile of elegance here. Makes me think... next bottle in 5-10 years. I also kind of want to blend this with the 2019...

Already juicy, red cherries, red berries, hints of cedar, subtle hint of leather, ripe structured tannins, fine acidity, shows great lenght. For Montrose quite ready. Has not substance like 2018

Bright crimson in the glass. Incredible definition on the expressive nose. Pure blackcurrant, fine spices and cedar. Very structured with huge palate intensity and a lovely freshness. Endless finish. This will be incredible once mature. The most impressive of the 2020s I have tried.

Superb Montrose, tasting very similar to the 2016, and while perhaps a notch off that future legend it's solidly ahead of the 2019 on my scorecard. It's an old-style Bordeaux in every sense except its bright magenta rim, infused with loads of woolly tannin with a firm grip extending all the way to the back of your throat which would probably make this challenging to drink if the fruit wasn't brimming with so much freshness. The flavors are dominated by blackberries with a nice juicy snap that leaves it closer to the edge of ripeness than you'd have been prepared for from this vintage, and a sheen that perseveres even through all that tannin. Pencil fillings and similar metallic elements contribute as much to the flavor as the fruit itself, but there is almost no trace of any element of woodiness, just a bit of something enticingly scorched.

Dark black cherry notes with a sour note. Lingering tannins. Obviously just a baby but a lot going on - probably will take 20 years to really show its full potential. If you must try one go for it - I aerated it heavily with a decant through a venturi wine aerator and drank over a few hours. I look forward to seeing this one mature over the years.
