92 Points

Sunday, January 10, 2010 - I've tried the Ampuis multiple times, but this was just the 2nd time with the whole bottle and time to spend with it. Upon opening, this wine was full of chocolate and raspberries, but not the signature black pepper I'm used to. Lots of oak, and it tastes expensive. Threw this in the decanter and drank it over the course of 7 hours. The pedigree is there. A hard core of minerality and intensity was with this wine, but wound up too tightly to ever enjoy. Not to mention that the oak masked a lot of the primal characters of N. Rhone Syrah that I love so much. It was, for me, a little too polished at the moment. I'd love to try this wine in ten years to see what's happening. But I wouldn't pop this open right now if you have any. 91-94, because it's really hard to read this wine right now, not to mention that I have trouble scoring on potential when the $20 wine stood up to this pretty evenly tonight.
