Saturday, September 3, 2011 - Well, back in 2002 this was the champagne that got me to start tacking a closer look at wine with bubbles. Before that, all the sparkling wines I had were low priced stuff like Korbel and cheap Cava. Needless to say the Veuve was much more interesting than those wines.

Fast forward to 2011 and I have become much more spoiled when it comes to champagne. In addition, I think the Veuve yellow label has also dipped slightly in quality compared to 9 or 10 years ago. Although the Veuve is certainly not bad (very neutral tasting actually), it gives me a little bit of a cheap white wine flavor in the back of my mouth that I never notcied before. However, I know that many of my friends who don't drink much champagne still swear by Veuve as a go to wine when they want something with bubbles. Nothing wrong with that, but with a little effort, there are so many more interesting champagnes in the same price category when compared to Veuve Yellow label. Two examples are the Pierre Peters NV Cuvee Reserve and the Vilmart NV Grand Cellier.
