Thursday, January 28, 2021 - The End of the Golden Weather: a pre-COVID-19 Visit to Central Otago in Autumn 2020: I served the two 1999s as a pair double blind. Another major step up in quality with this pair. On opening, the wine was earthy, umami and savoury, with five spice on the nose. With five hours air, it was a brilliant wine, still earthy and umami but elegant and refined yet deep, with mainly red berry and cherry fruit layers. A Maupertui still with years to go (the winemakers typically picked the pair of wines as 10-15 years younger than 1999). Power and concentration. All class!
