Wednesday, April 29, 2009 - La Spinetta tasting (Bacchus, Waterboathouse): My favourite of the three Barbarescos, even though the other two were 2004s. More classic, perhaps more terroir-driven on the nose than the Starderi and Valereino with truffles, earth, sweet plums and a touch of mint, thyme and other herbs with a whiff of smoky wood spice. The palate was marked with firm, teeth coating tannins and round, balanced acidity, both contributing to a superb sense of structure and extract undergirding a palate with plenty of red and dark fruit along with a hint of a savoury edge. There was some power here, maybe not as complex and layered as the pair of 2004s on the midpalate, but with a better sense of balanced and poise. It rounded off with a long, clingy finish, with ripe tannins and more mint and thyme. Very nice.
