  • 2005 has better concentration and structure than the 2003 which was tasted alongside in a mini vertical. A well matured Barbareco with a nose of prune, dried flowers, plum, black cherry, tobacco, tar and vanilla. Bold and rounded. Very long finish.

  • Appearance: Bright and clear, the wine is of light ruby colour, with fading garnet rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity aromas of red fruit of cherries, black fruit of blackberry, dried fruit of prune, floral notes of violet, mineral notes of earth and tar, sweet spice of thyme, pungent spice of licorice, animal notes of meaty, maturity notes of truffle. The wine is developing.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium tannin of silky texture, medium (+) alcohol, with medium body and medium (+) intensity flavours of black fruit of blackberry, red fruit of dark cherries, floral notes of violet, sweet spice of thyme, mineral notes of tar. The wine has a medium (+) finish.
Conclusion: Very good quality Barbaresco with an intense nose showing great complexity, with a good balance of fruit (both red and black), mineral, sweet spice and violet, and a nice mushroom aroma, the wine is elegant, well-balanced on acidity with silky tannin, showing good concentration of flavours and a fairly long finish. It is ready to drink now but can benefit from further ageing of another 3-5 years.

  • Fairly developed mature at this point. Heavy bricking / brownish color. Nose has some minty stuff going on along with fair amount of tertiary. On the palate, grippy tannins still. Definitely in a place where you should start drinking this up, but still has a fair amount of structure that it'll go for some while as well.

Received this last year straight from the winery so it's essentially a "library" release.

  • This is obviously a well made wine but it showed nothing of interest. The fruit wasn't really present and the tannins were not harsh. It was just a plain, decent Barbaresco. I don't know that age will improve this. Not a value for the price. I've had La Spinetta Barolos and other 05 Barbarescos that were much better.

  • Decanted for a few minutes before trying but would have benefitted from many hours. Beautiful and relatively forward aromas of cherry, violet and tar. This didnt prepare me for the fierce tannins. Headed for beauty i think but only after a much longer beauty sleep. Still, happy to make its acquaintance on this list.

  • Vindredi (Bellevue, WA): Tasted blind. Dark and brooding, with a brambly character. You can definitely smell the wood on this one. Impressive, silky texture with a backbone of fine tannins. Super well balanced, and extremely elegant.

  • Tasted blind. Hands down favorite of the group. Nice acid, a bit sparkly. Creamyness and newer overall style. Lovely construction and finish. My rank: 1/4 Group rank: 1/4

  • Beautiful nose. Even with a few hours decanting tannins very strong. Great acidity and structure, not sure why drinking range is 2010-2020, would put this more along the lines of 2015-2025.

  • Tasted at the winery. I'm only posting the wines I liked best. Brick color. Nose of black cherry and licorice. Young but approachable wine with excellent length, sweet tannins, and refreshing acidity.

  • pop n pour. Very perfumed on the nose, this showed ripe cherry, violet, herbs and roses. Medium-bodied+ on the palate, it presents fresh raspberry, red berries, creamy oak and plenty of fresh acidity. The tannins are a bit grainy right now, but the classic structure cannot be ignored. This is a winner, folks. Drink thru 2025, approx $100

  • La Spinetta tasting (Bacchus, Waterboathouse): My favourite of the three Barbarescos, even though the other two were 2004s. More classic, perhaps more terroir-driven on the nose than the Starderi and Valereino with truffles, earth, sweet plums and a touch of mint, thyme and other herbs with a whiff of smoky wood spice. The palate was marked with firm, teeth coating tannins and round, balanced acidity, both contributing to a superb sense of structure and extract undergirding a palate with plenty of red and dark fruit along with a hint of a savoury edge. There was some power here, maybe not as complex and layered as the pair of 2004s on the midpalate, but with a better sense of balanced and poise. It rounded off with a long, clingy finish, with ripe tannins and more mint and thyme. Very nice.

  • La Spinetta Tasting (Bacchus Boarthouse): Much more restrained sweetness on the nose but still showing some sweet flowers. Brambly, tarry and some spices. Ah! Finally, a real lovely and elegant showing of light cherries, summer berries and dash of hawthorne berries. Grippy sand-like tannins that lingers a while .
