Saturday, July 23, 2011 - Very strange wine. Colour was very dark, almost opaque and brown with some garnet. Nose very much like a Sherry Oloroso. Fully mature aromas of ink, deep-deep stewed fruit, oxidative sherry notes, molasses and ground coffee beans. In the mouth it is full bodied with sweet supple mouthcoating texture and tannins which have softened but are still there. Flavours are intense with roasted coffee beans on the foreground, walnuts, dried fruit, molasses. Length is memorable, nutty flavours open up in the mouth and last unendingly... Huge extract, this wine must have been a monster at youth. Not easy to appreciate the almost Sherry Oloroso-like style of the wine if encountered for the first time, lacks the elegance and charm of Lopez de Heredia Rioja of the same vintage with which it was drank together, but has immense power and character.
