Sunday, September 9, 2007 - In the spirit of infanticide, our host opened this baby. Dark, dark jeweled ruby with a nose that was at first quite tight. This is a hugely structured, brooding, meaty wine. Anise, black cherries, raspberry and blackberry essence , with almost a liqueur level of extraction. Great, great OV Grenache sap with a stony background. It took this wine 2-3 hours in a decanter to really give it all up. At first the texture was a bit harsh with huge tannins, but this opened into a fabulous wine. Pure, and dare I say, fresh fruit: black cherries and blackberries, more anise- really pushing the dark fruit side of Grenache. Then thyme, bay leaf, and more kirsch. The only possible detractor, aside form its extreme youth, was the tiniest hint of pruniness on the finish. That is splitting the smallest of hairs. This is a fabulous wine that I would not touch for several years. 98 pts
